An independent study is a course you design with a teacher's approval, often for credit. You write a short proposal, find a supervising teacher, and agree on what you will finish, ideally a paper or project.
Your GPA is one number, but most high schools actually track two versions of it behind the scenes: an unweighted GPA and a weighted one. AP classes only meaningfully change one of those numbers, and understanding which one matters here.
