Have you ever wanted to explore advanced topics or discover new interests? For many middle school students, academic programs offer a way to try out new subjects, learn practical skills, and build confidence. These programs allow you to explore subjects from coding and engineering to writing and research while connecting you with instructors and peers who help broaden your perspective. They are especially helpful if you’re starting to explore your academic interests for high school and want to challenge yourself, experiment with something new, and see what learning can look like outside your regular school routine. 


We’ve put together a list of the 14 best programs for middle school students in Iowa, along with some excellent virtual options when local opportunities are limited. These picks are challenging, selective, and backed by organizations known for strong student support.

The Iowa City Community School District’s Middle School Program of Studies lays out a clear academic pathway for students in grades 6–8, combining core classes with a wide range of electives that spark curiosity and support personalized learning. The program includes full-year courses in science, language arts, social studies, and mathematics, along with multiple accelerated pathways in world languages, advanced math, and fine arts.

You're matched with scholars from leading universities such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, Duke, and LSE, allowing you to take a deep dive into subjects you are curious about while building your own independent project. The program places a strong emphasis on guided exploration, critical thinking, and creativity, providing a structured yet flexible environment to investigate ideas that inspire you. The ICON Middle School STEAM Program provides a creative, challenging academic experience for students in grades 6–8 who enjoy hands-on learning. Rooted in an integrated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) framework, the curriculum blends core academics with project-based exploration and artistic innovation. You’ll take traditional courses in math, science, social studies, and language arts, while also enrolling in three to four arts-based semester courses each year in areas such as visual arts, dance, theatre, music, and design and production.

The AI Trailblazers program introduces middle school students to artificial intelligence and machine learning through hands-on, engaging lessons. You’ll learn Python basics and explore core AI topics such as data analysis, regression, neural networks, image classification, and AI ethics. You’ll also complete a practical project, such as building a classification model or designing an algorithm to help users make decisions. The program sets you up well for more advanced Veritas AI coursework as you progress into high school.

The ICON 7th–12th Grade Arts Academy provides an experiential conservatory-style education for aspiring young artists who want academic coursework alongside artistic training. The Pioneers program offers a hands-on, adventure-filled week for rising 7th graders who are excited to explore the outdoors. You’ll spend time on Ewalu’s farm caring for animals, gardening, and participating in an end-of-week hoe-down. The experience includes classic summer camp activities such as swimming, crafts, a field trip to Fontana Park, and a challenge on the high ropes course. Each night, you’ll sleep in covered wagons, adding a fun historical and adventurous twist to your outdoor adventure.

M.A.D. Camp (Music, Art, and Drama) gives middle school artists a week filled with creativity and self-expression. This webinar from the Harvard Kennedy School, led by Professor Matthew Bunn, offers an introduction to the rising nuclear risks facing the world today. The session examines the geopolitical shifts and technological developments that have increased the likelihood of nuclear weapons being used in conflict for the first time since 1945. Professor Bunn outlines the current landscape of nuclear dangers across global regions while also presenting strategies and policy approaches that could help reduce these risks.

The Middle School After School Program (MSAS) at UC Berkeley’s Business Academy for Youth is a virtual enrichment experience that introduces 6th–8th graders to the basics of business and entrepreneurship. Each year features a central theme, and the 2026 session focuses on Artificial Intelligence and its growing influence on modern industries. You’ll participate in interactive activities, collaborative projects, and guided exercises using the Business Model Canvas to turn creative ideas into actionable, real-world solutions.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) offers advanced academic programs for high-ability students who want to go beyond what typical school curricula offer. With both online and on-campus options, you’ll explore subjects ranging from STEM and the humanities to specialized topics such as space colonization, crime scene investigation, and web design. CTY’s Online Courses allow middle school students from around the world to study year-round at their own pace, with personalized instructor feedback and a supportive virtual community.

The McGraw-Hill United States History program is an inquiry-based middle school curriculum that helps middle school students connect the nation’s past to the present. You’ll practice gathering evidence, analyzing historical perspectives, and drawing informed conclusions about major events. You’ll work with a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including interviews, magazine excerpts, poems, song lyrics, and historical photographs.

If you’re interested in pursuing independent research, consider applying to one of the Lumiere Research Scholar Programs, selective online high school programs for students founded with researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Also check out the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation, a non-profit research program for talented, low-income students. Last year, we had 150 students on full need-based financial aid!
