What Is Princeton's Acceptance Rate? 2026-27 Guide

7 min read

TL;DR: Princeton's fall 2025 acceptance rate was 4.4%: 1,868 admits from 42,303 applicants. Its yield was 75.4%. Those figures describe an earlier class. To apply in 2026-27, show strong preparation, genuine curiosity, meaningful work and a voice that sounds like you. If you want to explore a question deeply, the Lumiere Research Scholar Program pairs you with a mentor to shape and carry out an independent project.

If you're a high schooler wondering how to get into Princeton, the acceptance rate gives you a starting point. The more useful question is what your application can show. Princeton wants students ready for demanding classes who will also add something to its community. You can make that case through your transcript, activities, essays, recommendations and graded paper. This guide puts each piece in context so you can decide what to work on next.

Princeton's 2025-26 Common Data Set reports 42,303 applicants, 1,868 admits and 1,408 enrollees for fall 2025. The acceptance rate was 4.4%, and the yield was 75.4%, meaning about three in four admitted students enrolled. These are the latest complete figures in Princeton's published Common Data Set, not a prediction of your result or the final rate for the 2026-27 application cycle.

Princeton's admissions statistics page has newer class information, but the published profile does not give a matched applicant-and-admit total for a new rate. Keep the fall 2025 label attached to 4.4%. The number shows how selective the recent pool was. It does not tell you which experiences or qualities will make your application memorable.

Is it easier to get into Princeton through early action or regular decision?

Princeton offers nonbinding single-choice early action (SCEA) and regular decision. It has not published comparable current round-by-round counts that prove an early advantage. Choose the plan that fits your application and college list:

  1. Single-choice early action: Apply by November 1 if your application is ready. Princeton usually notifies applicants in mid-December. The plan is nonbinding; if admitted, you have until May 1 to decide. It restricts most other early applications to private U.S. colleges, with exceptions listed in Princeton's rules.

  2. Regular decision: Apply by January 1 if you want more time to prepare or compare early options. Princeton usually releases decisions in late March, and admitted students also have until May 1 to reply. The graded written paper is due with either application.

Princeton recommends an October SAT/ACT test by SCEA or December by regular decision if you choose to submit scores. Check Princeton's live dates and restrictions before you apply.

What qualities is Princeton looking for in an applicant?

Princeton describes intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, personal and extracurricular accomplishments, and contribution to its community. Its admission dean says there is no single trait that gets someone in. These four qualities can help you show the full person behind the application:

Quality Princeton seeks

How to show it

Academic readiness

Use courses and teacher insight to show the challenge available at your school and how you met it.

Intellectual curiosity

Trace a question you pursued in class, a project or an essay, including a changed idea.

Sustained commitment

Describe your own contribution to a team, cause or activity over time.

Community contribution

Use lived experience and service to show what you would bring to campus conversations.

Together, your transcript, recommendations, activities and essays can show more than any one statistic. You need not invent a perfect persona. Let the reader see choices you actually made.

What grades and classes does Princeton expect?

Princeton has no single published GPA cutoff. Its recommended preparation depends on what your school offers. Use the table as a planning guide:

Area

Princeton recommends, if available

English

Four years, with continued writing practice

Mathematics

Four years; calculus for engineering interests

One language

Four years of the same language

Laboratory science

At least two years; physics and chemistry for engineering

History

At least two years

The next table shows SAT and ACT scores, reported GPA and testing policy for Princeton's fall 2025 enrolled-student profile. These are not admission cutoffs.

Fall 2025 profile

SAT composite

1490 / 1530 / 1560 (25th / median / 75th); 60% of enrollees submitted SAT. Not a cutoff.

ACT composite

34 / 35 / 35 (25th / median / 75th); 20% submitted ACT. Scores were optional for this cohort.

High school GPA

72% of GPA reporters had 4.0; 99% reported GPA. School scales differ, so focus on rigor in context.

Testing policy

Optional for fall 2027 entry, required for fall 2028 entry. Check the policy for your cycle.

Princeton evaluates rigor in context. Choose classes that stretch you, then work steadily in them. If your school cannot offer every suggested course, Princeton says it gives full consideration to that context. For fall 2027 entry, the SAT/ACT remains optional without disadvantage for those who omit scores. The requirement returns for fall 2028 entrants.

What extracurriculars stand out to Princeton?

Princeton asks what you have accomplished beyond class and how you might contribute. Depth gives you better evidence than a long list of titles. Consider these ways to make an activity concrete:

  1. Build or improve something: Explain the need you noticed, the decisions you made and how others used the result.

  2. Stay with a community commitment: Show what you learned from the people involved and how your contribution changed over time.

  3. Pursue an independent question: Describe the method you tried, what surprised you and where the work led.

An independent research project gives you something substantial to show: the work itself and the decisions behind it. In the Lumiere Research Scholar Program, you work one-on-one with a research mentor to develop an original paper, get feedback and finish a piece you can discuss in your application.

How do you write the Princeton essays?

For 2026-27, choose the academic prompt for your degree path, then answer Princeton's voice, service and short-answer questions. Each answer should do a different job:

  1. Academic interests (A.B. or undecided) or engineering (B.S.E.): A.B. and undecided applicants name the areas that spark their curiosity and connect them to Princeton's programs. B.S.E. applicants explain their engineering interest through something they have encountered or tried, then show why Princeton fits. You answer one of these two prompts, not both.

  2. Your voice: Princeton asks how your lived experience will shape conversations on campus. Start with a real experience, say what it taught you, and show what classmates might learn from your perspective.

  3. Service and civic engagement: Explain where your own story meets responsibility to others. A specific choice and its effect will say more than a general promise to serve.

  4. More about you: Give three brief answers on a skill you want to learn, what brings you joy and a song that fits your life now. Let these add details the longer essays do not repeat.

The graded written paper is another kind of evidence. Princeton asks for a paper from a recent English, social studies or history class, with the assignment, grade and teacher comments. It prefers expository, thesis-driven analysis over science research or a mostly data-based paper. Pick work that shows how you build an argument and handle evidence, rather than the highest grade alone. If a research paper came from an eligible class and fits those guidelines, it may work; an independent lab manuscript by itself does not replace the graded school paper. Read the paper instructions before uploading.

What does Princeton expect of you once you're in?

At Princeton, independent work is a graduation requirement. A.B. students complete junior independent work and a senior thesis. B.S.E. students undertake independent research through either a year-long senior thesis or semester-long projects. Students develop a question, work with faculty advisers, and carry a substantial project through to a clear account of what they learned. The precise requirements vary by department. In your application, show how a question you have already explored could grow into that kind of sustained work.

What does Princeton cost, and what does its aid cover?

Princeton lists $86,680 for tuition, fees, housing and food in the 2025-26 academic year. Princeton meets full demonstrated need for admitted students under its own aid formula and replaces student loans in its aid packages with grants that do not need repayment. It applies the same aid policy to international students. The no-loan policy tells you how aid is packaged; it does not mean every family pays nothing.

Use Princeton's net price calculator to estimate a U.S. or Canadian family's contribution before judging affordability. It currently models 2025-26 costs, so treat its result as an estimate for a later entry year. International applicants should use Princeton's financial-aid guidance instead of assuming the calculator covers their situation. Aid is worth checking early: a high sticker price and the amount your family may pay are different questions.

FAQs

Does Princeton offer early decision?

No. Princeton offers nonbinding single-choice early action and regular decision. Its early plan restricts some other early applications, so check the exceptions first.

What GPA do you need to get into Princeton?

Princeton publishes no minimum GPA for admission. It reviews your transcript in the context of the classes your school offers. Show the strongest sustained work you can do.

What can you do if you're worried about your GPA for Princeton?

Princeton has no required GPA. Keep working on your classes; use extracurriculars and projects to show your interests and growth. If you'd like help, the Lumiere Research Scholar Program pairs you with a research mentor to shape a question and write a paper. You can discuss that work in your application.

Does Princeton require SAT or ACT scores for fall 2027?

No. The 2026-27 application cycle is test optional. Princeton says students applying without scores are not disadvantaged. It will require SAT or ACT for fall 2028 entrants.

Do you need to publish research to get into Princeton?

Publication is not an application requirement. A project can help readers understand your curiosity when you explain the question, choices and learning behind it.
