What Is UPenn's Acceptance Rate? 2026-27 Guide

TL;DR: Penn admitted 3,570 of 72,544 fall 2025 applicants, a 4.92% acceptance rate, and enrolled 2,420, a 67.8% yield. Its 9,503 Early Decision applicants received 1,266 offers (13.32%). These are fall 2025 figures, not Class of 2030 rates. Penn wants to understand how you've pursued your interests and what you'll bring to your chosen school. An independent project can give you a concrete story to tell; the Lumiere Individual Research Program helps you develop one with a one-to-one mentor.

If you're a high schooler curious about Penn, an acceptance rate can feel like the whole story. It isn't. You have a choice of four very different undergraduate schools, and the way you show your interests matters. We'll look at the latest complete admit numbers, what Early Decision means for you, and how to bring your own experiences into Penn's essays. By the end, you'll have a clearer idea of where you fit and what to work on next.

Penn's 2025-26 Common Data Set reports 72,544 first-year applicants, 3,570 admitted students and 2,420 enrolled students for fall 2025, leaving a 4.92% acceptance rate and a 67.8% yield.

The rate gives you a sense of Penn's selectivity. Your next step is more personal: explore the school and curriculum that fit your interests, then show what you've already done with them.

How does UPenn Early Decision compare with Regular Decision?

Penn's fall 2025 Common Data Set records 9,503 Early Decision applications and 1,266 ED admits, a 13.32% ED rate. The overall 4.92% rate includes this group; the CDS does not publish a separate Regular Decision rate. These applicant pools differ, so the gap between their rates does not predict your own result. Penn's Common Data Set.

Penn's current Early Decision plan is binding. If admitted, you commit to enroll and withdraw other applications. Penn says ED suits students confident it is their first choice; Regular Decision gives you more time and lets you compare offers and financial aid packages. For fall 2027 entry, the application deadlines are November 1, 2026 for ED and January 5, 2027 for RD. Penn's first-year plans.

Choose ED when Penn is truly your first choice, the binding agreement works for your family, and your application is ready by November. Choose RD when you want to compare financial aid packages or need time to strengthen your application. A higher historical ED rate alone is not a reason to sign a binding commitment.

What does each of Penn's four undergraduate schools look for?

You apply to one of Penn's four undergraduate schools or a coordinated dual-degree program. Penn students can usually take electives across schools. The useful fit question is where your academic preparation and main interests meet the school's curriculum. Penn's four-school guide.

Penn says it looks for

Who may fit

College of Arts & Sciences

Curiosity, multiple ways of thinking, broad advanced preparation

A student drawn to inquiry across disciplines

Nursing

Patient care, health questions, chemistry and biology

A student committed to care and healthcare practice

Engineering

Design and applied science, physics and calculus

A student who builds and tests technical ideas

Wharton

Business for positive change, leadership, calculus

A student exploring problems through business and economics

Use the table to choose where your preparation and interests fit. Penn reads your opportunities in context, including coursework, projects, jobs and contributions to your community.

How should you answer Penn's 2026-27 essay prompts?

Penn asks every applicant for two short answers and then a prompt tied to the school or program selected. Rather than repeating the activities list three times, give each response its own job. Penn's current writing prompts.

  • Thank-you note (50-200 words): Thank someone specific for something they did. Show the relationship through a detail, not a list of your achievements.

  • Community (50-200 words): Explain how you would explore community at Penn and how your experiences might shape it. A real example of listening, helping or building with others gives the answer a center.

  • School-specific prompt (50-200 words): Answer the exact question for your chosen school. The College asks about curiosity; Nursing asks about healthcare and equity; Wharton asks about a current issue and business methods; Engineering asks how you would pursue your engineering interests in your intended major. Penn's school-specific prompts.

If a project is central to your interests, use it to explain a choice you made and where you want to take the question next. Describing your own role and what changed during the work will usually say more than repeating a project title. Give Penn a reason your chosen school's curriculum fits that direction.

What extracurriculars matter for a Penn application?

Penn reads activities in the context of what was available to you and how you chose to spend your time. Show the role you played and the impact you had, rather than trying to make every line sound like a prize. Different kinds of sustained work can make your interests and contribution clear:

  • An internship, part-time job or family responsibility can show initiative, reliability and how you contributed in a real setting.

  • Service, a club or creative work can show what you built with people in your school or community.

  • Research can show how you asked a question, tested an idea and explained what changed. A project can show initiative and a way of thinking, but it is one activity among many.

If research interests you, choose a question you can investigate, then explain your method and what changed as you worked. Through the Lumiere Individual Research Program, you can work one-to-one with a mentor to develop that idea into an independent project.

FAQs

How should you use Penn's acceptance rate when planning your application?

Treat 4.92% as a sign of selectivity, then look at how your interests match your chosen school. Your coursework, activities and essays can show how you might contribute to its community.

Is Penn's 52% Early Decision share the ED acceptance rate?

No. That newer profile describes the share of incoming students admitted early. The fall 2025 Common Data Set, a different cohort, reports 1,266 ED admits from 9,503 ED applications, or 13.32%.

Do applicants choose a Penn undergraduate school?

Yes. You apply to a school or coordinated program. The College, Nursing, Engineering and Wharton have different curricula and school-specific prompts, while students can often take electives across Penn's schools. Penn's four-school guide.

Should you submit a research paper as extra material?

Penn says most applicants do not need supplemental material and cannot guarantee a review of it. Use the required application first to show your role and learning; follow the current Applicant Portal instructions if additional material adds essential context. Penn's supplemental-material guidance.

Can research strengthen a Penn application?

Yes, especially when it connects to questions you would bring to your chosen Penn school. A neighborhood health project might lead you toward Nursing; a study of how a local business serves its community might sharpen a Wharton interest. Explain what you learned and the choices you made, whatever the outcome.

Where can you get help developing a research idea for Penn?

If you have a question you want to pursue but do not know how to begin, the Lumiere Research Scholar Program pairs you with a researcher. Together, you can set a plan, investigate the question and shape the work into an independent project that reflects your own thinking.
