15 Medical Research Internships for Undergraduates

If you’re an undergraduate interested in medicine and want to see how research shapes the field, one way to start is by joining a medical research internship.

Medical research internships place you in labs, hospitals, or research centers where you might assist with experiments, analyze clinical data, or contribute to ongoing studies. Some focus on basic science like genetics or immunology, while others look at public health, policy, or patient-centered projects.

Through these experiences, you’ll learn how research is designed, how findings are communicated, and how different teams work together to advance medicine. Internships can also help you build skills that are useful for medical school or future graduate study.

To help you explore, we’ve put together a list of 15 medical research internships for undergraduates!

One other option—the Lumiere Research Scholar Program

If you’re interested in pursuing independent research, consider applying to one of the Lumiere Research Scholar Programs, selective online high school programs for students founded with researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Last year, we had over 4,000 students apply for 500 spots in the program! You can find the application form here.

Also check out the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation, a non-profit research program for talented, low-income students. Last year, we had 150 students on full need-based financial aid!

Stephen is one of the founders of Lumiere and a Harvard College graduate. He founded Lumiere as a Ph.D. student at Harvard Business School. Lumiere is a selective research program in which students work one-on-one with a research mentor to develop a research paper.
