You will also work on an original research project with expert support every step of the way. The experience is also about expanding your thinking, sharpening your problem-solving skills, and learning how to approach big questions with creativity and depth.

Admission is selective and holistic, requiring academic transcripts, work samples, and a $65 fee. While you can apply for multiple courses, you will be admitted to a single course at a time.

AI Trailblazers by Veritas AI is a solid place to begin if you’re curious about how AI works and want to start building AI projects. This online STEM program for gifted middle school students is designed to cover the foundations of AI and machine learning. Across 25 hours, you’ll dive into Python programming, data analysis, neural networks, regression, image classification, and even the ethical side of AI.


The program combines live lectures with group sessions, keeping the student-to-mentor ratio low at 5:1, so you can expect plenty of support. Past students have built projects like music genre classifiers and personalized educational resource tools using machine learning.

Through live, seminar-style classes averaging just 12 students, you explore advanced subjects like computational thinking, inquiry-based physics, and mathematics, with the chance of taking courses above your grade level after placement testing. You benefit from real-time discussions led by instructors who meet Stanford University standards, enhancing critical reasoning, communication, and analytical skills. Beyond academics, the program includes structured counseling, wellness support, and community-building activities designed specifically for younger learners.


 Offerings include flexible enrollment (single course, part-time, or full-time) letting you tailor the experience to your readiness and ambitions. To be admitted, you submit transcripts, evidence of any extracurricular involvement, essays, and teacher recommendations, along with a parent questionnaire. Standardized test scores are optional but may be required.

CTY programs also offer individually paced, session-based, and live course options to choose from. Admission requires qualifying test scores that suggest academic ability 2 levels above your current grade, and you are encouraged to view the requirements for the course you choose.

Northwestern’s Center for Talent Development (CTD) offers a range of online STEM programs for gifted middle school students, which you can view by applying advanced filters for ‘Honors/High School Credit’ and ‘AP(®)’ here. These courses are designed for qualified middle schoolers to study advanced STEM, including aircraft engineering and pre‑calculus honors. Through instructor support and flexible pacing, you will learn, investigate, analyze, and potentially create something of your own to demonstrate your learnings. Davidson Institute’s Explore offers advanced online STEM programs for gifted middle school students. Each course runs live weekly for an hour via Zoom, supplemented with asynchronous assignments, and is taught by experienced instructors from Davidson Academy Online. You tackle rigorous content, such as pre-algebra, contemporary science, or writing-intensive electives, while developing critical thinking, confidence, time management, and collaboration skills. 


With 15 students or fewer per course, Explore provides ample opportunities for interactive, hands-on projects (with lab kits mailed directly where needed) and dynamic peer discussions to deepen subject understanding. Admission requires students to be 9-13 years old and demonstrate giftedness through test scores or Davidson Young Scholar status.

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics’ Summer Accelerator Online offers rising 7th-9th graders a rigorous 2‑week STEM deep dive, with the first week self-paced and the second featuring live, interactive sessions led by university-level instructors. You can choose from STEM topics like AI, human anatomy, robotics, and more. You benefit from collaborative activities, problem-solving challenges, and peer interaction.


Admission is selective and offered on a rolling basis until classes fill; you need to submit thoughtful short answers and indicate course preferences. Tuition for the online option is $495 per course with need-based financial aid available for U.S. students.

The Institute for Educational Advancement (IEA) offers advanced online summer courses through its Academy program, including options for online STEM programs for gifted middle school students. Offering both in-person and online options, the Academy designs its classes to be hands-on and inquiry-based, with offerings in subjects such as engineering, environmental science, math problem-solving, and robotics. Sessions are led by experienced educators in small cohorts to ensure personalized attention. Courses may vary each session, so keep an eye on the ‘Schedule and Tuition’ section while applying. 


Admission criteria include a review of student work and evidence of giftedness. Financial aid is available, and course placement is determined by academic readiness rather than age or grade.
