Attending summer camps as a middle school student can be a great way to participate in fun activities and learn something new in a secure, engaging atmosphere. Summer camps are typically brief opportunities to dive into an educational or extracurricular field of interest. 


At camp, you may get to learn new skills, discover a new passion, and/or explore your interests while making new friends. You may also discover a new sport, explore nature, engage in creative arts, or participate in recreational activities during these programs. Certain camps also focus on personal skill-building, allowing you to gain experience in leadership, collaboration, accountability, empathy, and communication.

JEP, a fully remote program designed for middle school students, allows you to work one-on-one with a mentor and explore academic interests in a field of interest. Founded by Harvard and Oxford PhDs, the eight-week program offers the mentorship of scholars from top research universities such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, Duke, and LSE. You can select an exploration track from various disciplines, including AI, astrophysics, engineering, mathematics, environmental science, and history. Then, you will choose a topic and define your research project. In the process, you will get to refine your reading, writing, critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation skills to be better prepared for high school and future academics. The University of Georgia's Summer Academy offers a diverse range of camps in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics to middle school and high school students. You can choose middle school camps in various areas, including multimedia, zoology, medicine, technology, and environmental science. At your camp of choice, you will design a storyboard for film and animation to develop 2-D animation skills, design a robot, or learn the anatomical and physiological aspects of vertebrate animals. Veritas AI's Trailblazers program is a virtual program that allows middle school students to explore the basics of artificial intelligence and machine learning and work on an interdisciplinary project.  In the initial weeks, you will explore topics like regression, exploratory data analysis (EDA), and convolutional neural networks. Subsequent weeks will involve project work and exploration of niche topics. Your project can be interdisciplinary, focusing on the applications of AI in the field of medicine, finance, sports, etc. Throughout the program, you will attend online academic lectures and group sessions offering a 5:1 student-to-mentor ratio. AJRA offers summer rowing camps for middle school and high school students. You can join an LTR camp as a beginner or a Returning Rower camp if you have some experience with rowing. In the one-week LTR camp, you will learn rowing skills on the Chattahoochee River. You will acquire knowledge about the sport and its equipment, how to rig and de-rig boats, and safety aspects on and off the water. Here, you will live outdoors in a rustic cabin and participate in recreational and challenging activities while exploring nature. You can choose a daily structured schedule of five activities based on interests, including arts and crafts, drama, canoeing, archery, horseback riding, swimming, basketball, and hiking. You will also have the chance to engage in theme-night informal group activities like storytelling, staging a skit, singing songs, or folk dancing, and participate in a rotational campfire/pool party.

The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) hosts summer camps for various age groups with morning and afternoon camp options. You can enroll in sports camps, theme camps, or outdoor camps and choose from various STEAM-related activities. For instance, camps may offer you opportunities to learn through a team-based culinary challenge, an obstacle course where you participate as a Ninja Warrior, projects like creating a fashion brand or building a robot, developing a story for the stage, and designing craft and art pieces. Camp Southern Ground hosts week-long residential camps, giving children ages 7–17 an opportunity to explore nature and spend time outdoors. At camp, you will participate in activities spanning a wide variety of areas, including the performing arts, water sports, horseback riding, and biking. You will collaborate with peers in recreational and sports activities involving archery, rock wall climbing, boating, horse riding, ceramics, cooking, and more. Code Ninjas camps offer children interested in tech opportunities to get hands-on coding experience. At a Code Ninjas camp near you, you will develop tech skills as well as problem-solving and logical thinking abilities while participating in fun challenges with peers.

You will learn coding fundamentals and build video games with tools like ScratchJr, MakeCode Arcade, and Unity. You can choose to learn basic block coding, robotics, or programming in Minecraft or Roblox. You can explore options in Georgia at Hamilton Mill, Suwanee, Cumming, and Alpharetta (Milton) to know what to expect.

At the Clay Camp, you will learn how to use a pottery wheel to build a creative, functional piece. In the Art Attack Camp, you will work with a pottery wheel, develop artistic skills in watercolor and acrylics, and explore printmaking techniques. The Suwanee Arts Center offers middle and high school students classes throughout the year as well as summer camps in art, film-making, pottery, and other creative fields. You can enroll in a class or camp that aligns with your interests. If you choose the five-day Jr. Filmmakers Camp, you will learn the basics of filmmaking, storyboarding, cinematography, sound design, and editing. In the Stop Motion Clay Animation Camp, you will bring clay creations to life using stop-motion animation techniques. These camps can help you develop teamwork and leadership skills while you collaborate with peers. You can also explore Pottery Wheel camps (for ages 13 and up), in which you will explore wheel-throwing and build creative pieces.

Valley View Ranch is a private equestrian camp for girls offering a diverse range of riding programs supervised by experienced professionals. You will attend classes that align with your riding ability. You can spend time with your favorite ranch horse during your stay, or bring your own horse! You will learn equitation and pleasure riding through various riding programs, including English and Hunt Seat, Western Stock Seat, Barrels and Gymkhana, Trails, and Vaulting. You will also bond with peers in activities covering environmental education, swimming, archery, crafts, theater and dance, group games, etc. A horse show and awards session typically conclude the camp experience.



Stephen is one of the founders of Lumiere and a Harvard College graduate. He founded Lumiere as a Ph.D. student at Harvard Business School. Lumiere is a selective research program in which students work one-on-one with a mentor to develop an independent research paper.
