The Lumiere Junior Explorer Program offers an engaging 8-week experience for middle school students. As a participant, you will be paired with a mentor and will get to explore your academic interests and develop a passion project. Mentors are accomplished scholars from top-tier institutions like Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, Duke, and LSE.  


Throughout the program, you will progress through structured phases. You will explore different topics and tracks in the first four weeks. Weeks five and six intensify this exploration, allowing you to focus deeply on a single area of interest. The final two weeks will be dedicated to project creation, where you will work closely with your mentors to bring your ideas to life.

Eligibility: Students in grades 6-8

Program dates: 25 hours over 10 weeks (on weekends) during the spring cohort and 25 hours over 2 weeks (on weekdays) during the summer cohort.

The AI Trailblazers program by Veritas AI is a virtual program that teaches middle school students the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Over 25 hours, you will learn the basics of Python as well as topics like data analysis, regression, image classification, neural networks, and AI ethics. Students learn through lectures and group sessions with a 5:1 student-to-mentor ratio. Previous projects done by students have included building a machine-learning model to classify music genres and creating a machine-learning algorithm to provide a custom list of educational resources based on selected specifications.

Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM) is a free, intensive math program for underserved middle school students. The program offers two distinct summer experiences: BEAM Discovery, a five-week day camp for 6th graders featuring math-focused classes, field trips, and activities. You will explore topics such as logic, math fundamentals, problem-solving strategies, and applied math; and BEAM Pathway, a residential program for 7th graders where you will live on a college campus, take college-style math courses, and engage in group problem-solving. Classes cover advanced topics like number theory, incidence geometry, and logic, along with applications in astrophysics and computer programming. BEAM provides long-term academic support, guiding you from middle school through college.

The New York Tech Middle School Summer Maker Academy is a week-long program designed for middle school students interested in technology and engineering. Hosted by the New York Institute of Technology, this program introduces you to 3D modeling, 3D printing, Arduino programming, and laser cutting/engraving in the context of sustainability. You will design and build a Clean Cargo Allocation Ready Truck (CCART)—a functional prototype focused on safe and sustainable product delivery, aligning with UN Sustainability Goal #3 (ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all). The State Pre-College Enrichment Program (S-PREP)—also known as Columbia’s Science & Technology Entry Program—is a free college preparatory program for students interested in medicine and STEM. Offered by Columbia University’s Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, this program provides rigorous academic coursework alongside essential college and career preparation. You can take classes in subjects such as biochemistry, physics, algebra, and psychology, gaining a strong foundation in science and mathematics. The program also includes an SAT prep course, academic counseling services, and college and career development workshops to help you navigate your future academic paths. Beyond the classroom, you will benefit from field trips and college tours.

The Stony Brook University Science Exploration Program is a laboratory-based experience for students who want to explore scientific research and experimentation. This program challenges you to think critically, conduct experiments, and deepen your understanding of key scientific principles through reading, computer research, writing, and collaborative projects. Seventh graders conduct experiments in physics, chemistry, microbiology, and ecology. Eighth graders explore biology, biotechnology, and environmental chemistry. The Stony Brook University Middle School Math Program offers an engaging environment that enables students to explore mathematics through activities and apply key concepts to problems. Designed to build confidence and enhance math skills, the program is divided into two levels. For 6th and 7th graders, the focus is on strengthening foundational skills through lessons such as Introduction to Algebra, Fun with Geometry, Fluency and Operations with Rational Numbers, Real-World Statistics, and an Introduction to Probability. For 8th and 9th graders, the program transitions toward high school mathematics preparation, focusing on linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. This advanced curriculum is particularly beneficial for students preparing to take Algebra in 8th grade or those who have already completed Algebra and want to reinforce their understanding. 


Stephen is one of the founders of Lumiere and a Harvard College graduate. He founded Lumiere as a PhD student at Harvard Business School. Lumiere is a selective research program where students work 1-1 with a research mentor to develop an independent research paper.
